  • Survey Overview: Conducted by Pew Research Center among U.S. teens (ages 13–17) between Sept. 18 and Oct. 10, 2024.
  • Constant Connectivity: Nearly half of all teens report being online "almost constantly," a figure that has doubled over the past decade (from 24% to 46%). 96% of teens use the internet daily.
  • Platform Popularity:
    • YouTube: The most used platform (90% reach), with 73% of teens visiting daily.
    • TikTok & Instagram: Used by roughly 60% of teens.
    • Snapchat: Used by 55% of teens.
    • Facebook & X: Usage has declined significantly over the last decade; Facebook is now at 32% (down from 71% in 2014-15) and X is at 17% (down from 33%).
    • Threads: Only 6% of teens report using the platform.
  • Demographic Trends:
    • Gender: Girls are more likely to use TikTok and Instagram; boys are more likely to use YouTube and have access to gaming consoles.
    • Race/Ethnicity: Black and Hispanic teens report higher rates of "almost constant" internet use and higher usage of TikTok, Instagram, and X compared to White teens.
    • Age: Older teens (15–17) are significantly more likely to use social platforms and be online constantly compared to younger teens (13–14).
    • Income: Facebook usage is highest among teens in lower-income households. High-income households have greater access to home computers and tablets.
  • Device Access:
    • Smartphone access is nearly universal (95%).
    • 88% have access to a computer, 83% to a gaming console, and 70% to a tablet.
    • Tablet access has increased from 65% in 2023 to 70% in 2024.
  • Partisanship: Democratic-leaning teens are more likely than Republican-leaning teens to use TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, and WhatsApp.
