Parenting Trends in a Diverse World

• Lighthouse Parenting (Balanced Parenting): Research consistently shows that a combination of high warmth and clear rules is the most effective parenting style, regardless of cultural background.
• Global Relevance: A study across eight countries (U.S., China, Italy, Kenya, Philippines, Thailand, Sweden, Colombia, and Jordan) confirmed that warmth and firmness are universally relevant parenting components.
• Bidirectional Influence: By early adolescence (ages 11–12), a teen’s behavior begins to influence the parent as much as the parent influences the teen; parenting is a two-way street.
• Diverse Family Structures: Family definitions are evolving. While many teens live with two parents, nearly one-third live with one parent, and the number of teens living with grandparents has been rising for 30 years.
